Telling Our Stories Through Comics Earlier this year our Young Voices Tuesday group explored comic making, with Art Therapist Malcy Duff and Youth Worker Ally Lloyd. Over 8 weeks we learnt about all things comics – from panels to plots, and bubbles to blurbs. Young Voices developed their own characters and took them on lots of different adventures as we learnt about comics. After we finished learning about different techniques and technical elements of comics, the group wanted to make a comic that brought together all their characters. They decided to tell the story of our Tuesday group. Moving from pen and paper to digital making, they created digital versions of their characters and told the story of our group. They created the comic for themselves, to explain to their friends and family about the group, and to share with other children who wanted to join the group and weren’t sure what to expect. You can read that story here: Malcy Duff, the Art Therapist working on this project, created a comic strip reflecting on working together to tell our stories: “This comic strip was inspired by working with the Young Voices group in the winter of 2025. We spent time creating our own comic book characters to tell different stories, and then shared them with the group. Sometimes it can be hard to tell our own stories, but with the help of comic characters, we can communicate who we are and what we are thinking about through the characters we make. Art Therapy can be a way to express our thoughts and feelings with pictures in a safe environment. You don't have to be an experienced artist - whatever marks you make - big or small, messy or neat - are all equally important. This comic strip ends at the beginning - the young cartoonist meeting their new character. Let the conversation begin.” Do you have a story you would like to tell with a comic?
