The Elsewhere Garden was designed by Semple Begg Garden and Landscape Design, following a brief from the Teapot Trust. After winning gold at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2023, the garden found its permanent home at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow in 2024.

Redesigned with care to suit its larger new space, the garden features wide, accessible pathways for wheelchairs and prams, along with quiet seating areas where families can pause, whether to process good news or difficult moments.

From the very beginning, children helped shape the garden’s design. That’s why you’ll find fantasy-style trees like Snorky and Grizzly growing here. And those bright pops of colour? They represent the sugar-rush of joy children feel when they discover the power of art therapy.

Teapot Trust Elsewhere Garden Plant List - Original List

The heart of the Teapot Trust Elsewhere Garden is plants, with over 80% of the space available allotted to plants aimed to engage and inspire. The garden hosted approximately 1,500 plants, combining to create an incredible environment representative of imagination and thoughts stimulated by art therapy.

Discover below how Semple Begg used their creative genius to incorporate specific plants representative of themes linked to the charity’s mission:

  • A ‘Dolly Mixture’ scheme, with swathes of pink, orange, red and yellow candelabra primula will be contrasted with dramatic foliage of Tetrapanax, Fatsia, and matrix plants. These plants were chosen specifically to represent imagination and thoughts stimulated by art therapy, from bright revelation to quiet reflection.
  • Picea abies 'Inversa' have been chosen for their unusual, anthropomorphic and dramatic form. They represent the ability of art therapy to help children and young people face down fear.
  • Candelabra primulas (Primula bulleyana, Primula japonica 'Apple Blossom' and Primula pulverulenta) and Eschscholzia californica were chosen for their eye-popping, fizzy, candy coloured exuberance and whimsical form.
  • Tetrapanax papyifer 'Rex' has massive, theatrical leaves and Eschschlozia californica was chosen for its bright, citrus burst colour, ability to self-sow/intermingle with other plants, and playful character.
  • Luzula nivea was picked for its soft, downy appearance and ability to thrive within different plant communities.

Growers and Installers: Plants incorporated in the garden were grown by British nurseries including the renowned Kelway Plants, who have supplied thousands of plants for previous shows, and have enabled the winning of top medals each year. They are one of the UK’s oldest nurseries and one of only a handful of growers with the skill and experience to grow plants for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

The trees were provided by Deepdale Trees expert growers of the UK's finest semi-mature shrubs and trees, with a proud reputation of supplying the professional market and a RHS Chelsea stalwart.

Stewart Landscape Construction, winners of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show ‘Best Construction’ award in 2021, used their extensive experience to build the Teapot Trust Elsewhere Garden at Chelsea.
